Portugal is located West of mainland Spain and North of Africa and because of it's location has more hours of sunshine than Florida. With only a two and a half hour flight from most destinations within the Uk, Portugal is the ideal holiday destination for young families, the elderly and disabled.
The Portugese are very family orientated and very friendly towards the British with many supermarkets now being built offering a wide range of British and Portugese products.
Portugal has beautifull sandy beaches with crystal clear waters offering safe bathing and long days of of clear blue sunny skies. The tap water in Portugal is drinkable and unlike Spain will not give you a throat infection, however due to the hardness of the water and the amount of chlorine added to the water most people choose to buy bottled water. During the summer period it can get very hot and dry so it is important to drink plenty, especially the young and elderly.
The bus services are very good here and reasonably cheap there is a train station in lagos as well.

On the isthmus of the Alvor bar stands Meia Praia fort, which defended Lagos bay in the 17th and 18th centuries. Historians say that it was off these beaches that the galleons carrying the treasure of Moctezuma, an Aztec emperor captured by the soldiers of Herman Cortez, were shipwrecked in 1522.
Batata, Estudantes, Homers, Pinhão, Dona Ana and Camilo - Sandy coves tucked between brightly coloured cliffs, these beaches include some interesting rock formations. Calm and clear water. Many believe these to be the most delightful beaches in the Algarve.
Canavial and Porto de Mós - Long beaches between cliffs. Tourist facilities.
Luz - A tourist centre with a cosmopolitan flavour. Large beach.
Porto Dona Maria - A calm and isolated beach
Sagres is about 20 minutes drive West, Sagres is better known these days for its fine beaches, popular with both sunbathers and surfers. In fact the shape of the coast here means you can find a sheltered beach, and/or good surf most of the year.
Praia da Mareta is the town's main beach is a 600 metre long beach 5 minutes from the centre of town. It is on the more sheltered southern side of the point and made up of sand and pebbles. It has easy parking and is a popular family beach.
Praia da Baleeira is a small beach situated on the eastern side of the harbour. Mostly sandy, there can be occasional problems with the water quality due to its proximity to the harbour.
Praia do Tonel is located on the exposed northern side of Sagres point. This often makes it a poular choice for surfers. It is a good sized sandy beach and is patrolled by lifeguards in the summer.
Praia do Martinhal is just outside Sagres to the east. It is a fine sandy beach surrounded by dunes. Being less central than the other beaches means it can be quieter.
